Roy W. Oscarson Turns 100!

On March 30, 1909, Roy Wilhelm Oscarson was born in Pleasant Grove, Utah. Today marks the passing of 100 years since that momentous day.

His was a life well-lived. His example of hard work, faithful service and love of family has marked the way for his posterity to follow. How we love him for all that he was and all that he did. He has left his family a rich heritage.

In the copy of The Oscarson Families he gave me in 1981, he wrote:

"To our son, Paul Kent Oscarson. Your finest inheritance -- a good name. With love, Dad and Mother"

Thank you, Dad, for your lasting gift to us all, "a good name!" We especially remember you on this special day...and thank the Lord for you and all you mean to us every day

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

I'm so glad you brought this momentous day to my attention! (And I am a beyond-words-type-of-glad that you are posting on your blog again!) Truly, what a gift he gave all of us: a good name, and his life and example to go with it. Personally, it was difficult for me to "give up" this good name when I married. So I kept it! Officially - according to the government - I have 4 names.

Happy 100th Birthday, Papa!

Oh how I love that face!!
How I love all that he was..
all he represented. I loved his wet kisses and heart-felt hugs..
his wavy hair, and tidy garage.
Thank you for realizing that today is what it is.. and for loving him and appreciating him the way you always have. I'm proud to be a part of all of you.

Well, here in St. Louis it is a day fitting for Papa's birthday. We had snow yesterday but spring has sprung today. The forsythia and dogwood are blooming and the grass is green. I even have some of Mema's mint planted in my yard and that's alive as well. It would be a day he would be in his yard, getting ready for his impatiens planting and games of croquet. Sometimes as we pass by 1 Devondale we find it hard to believe they aren't inside watching Wheel. Thanks Uncle Paul for reminding us of this special day.

Oh it does my heart good just to see pictures of him. How I miss him. Thank you for letting us know about this milestone! He has been our example on our coast to coast move into the unknown and we are grateful for our inheritance.

Oh, thank you for recognizing this day! I find myself often reading his and grandma's life stories. They were such a central part of my life growing up...a true gift. It is why I consider it such a blessing to live near grandparents now...I know how much my grandparents have influenced and blessed my life. Your father is proud of you in every way a father can feel proud...you carry the torch well! Thank you for being a wonderful papa! And for giving me the gift of a spectacular grandfather!

Hold on while I climb back into my chair after falling off in shock that you are back in my blogging world for the day.
I was thinking about Grandpa this week...every time I looked at my calendar and saw his birthday I thought how much I would love to be able to sit by him and visit right now. I miss them often. (I mean sit down here in life...not where he is right now, though I am sure it is a much nicer day there, than here.)

I was thinking of Grandpa all day on his birthday, grateful for his life, love and example. I often quote his saying "hard is good" and know he's right. Thank you for your post and for the pictures we love.

Halelujah! I thought about Grandpa on and off all that day--it's written in my planner--and I had meant to post. What a treat that you did. I didn't realize it was 100 years ago. That is amazing. Thank you for giving me the gift of a good name, just as he gave you. I have always known it was special. (Sorry I ditched it for a shorter one. I'm not ungrateful!)

I am grateful for your dad too. I still remember his talks to us in seminary when he came as a guest speaker and as my stake president for a while. He truly is a great man.

I am grateful to have many great names. While Rhodes is noble and honorable I am glad that in all of the ordinances of the Church that are recorded on earth and in heaven I am, and will be forever, Carrie Ann Oscarson.

President Roy W. Oscarson will be a man who holds a permanent and special memory for me....he was my mission president and a wonderful man of God. I worked for 8 months in his mission office and appreciated him each day as my testimony grew. Thank you, Oscarsons, for sharing him with us as missionaries in Scotland. -Ken Van Wagenen

President Ocsarson was a people person. He knew that the best approach was to inspire people to do their best. He worked on their imperfections and made them better. His legacy can be found in the measure of each person’s growth. This certainly was my experience. His input into my life occurred 45 years ago and still resonates today. All of his plaudits are richly deserved and serve to enrich and maintain his memory. Bob Ainsworth.
